Pierre Monteux was remembered by Sir Georg Solti in his memoirs as "one of most brilliant conductors of the first half of the twentieth century". Formally, he had played for and met Brahms, performed with Saint-Saëns and with Fauré, led the violas of Opera-Comique in the premiere of Debussy's Pelléas et Méllisande, and played under Gabriel Pierné in the world premiere of Stravinsky's L'Oiseau de feu in 1911. A year later, at the behest of the composer, Monteux conducted the world premiere of The Rite Of Spring . Monteux was to conduct a score of world premieres, including Petrushka, Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé, Debussy's Jeux, and works by Milhaud, Poulenc, Prokofiev and Bloch. His conducting posts included the Ballet Russes (1911-14), Metropolitan Opera (1917-19), the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1919–24), Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra (1924–34), Orchestre Symphonique de Paris (1929–38) and San Francisco Symphony (1936–52), and the London Symphony Orchestra (1961 until his death in 1963).

The recordings in this collection, made between 1956 and 1964 for Decca, Philips, Westminster and those recorded for RCA by Decca under the new agreement, reflect the breadth of Monteux’s repertoire, the freshness of his music-making and his fidelity to the score. Included are recordings of the conductor in rehearsal documenting the meticulous care he invested in preparation, his deep respect for orchestral musicians and the high demands he made on them. Pierre Monteux: Complete Decca Recordings offers a timely reminder of musical values that remain impervious to the dictates of “relevance”, today’s ubiquitous synonym for passing fashion.

Assembled together, for the first time, Pierre Monteux’s complete recordings for Decca, Philips, Westminster and Decca/RCA
Including bonus disc of rehearsal material never before released, from producer Christopher Raeburn’s archives (courtesy of the British Library) – including Daphnis et Chloé and Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 3 & 9
Includes the first international CD release of a Ravel disc conducted by Claude Monteux – Pierre’s son

“No conductor knew more than Monteux about the strings’ expressive possibilities.” –- Gramophone

“He was the kindest, wisest man I can remember, and there was nothing about conducting he didn't know.”
-- André Previn
